But a Moment

Those moments. The small pieces of time that together make up our days, weeks, months and years.

Sometimes it would be nice to put the brakes on them altogether and just catch our breath! If we had to see all of our moments at once, I think we’d be overwhelmed. It is a grace that they come to us one at a time—and an even greater grace that we have a faithful Heavenly Father who already knows and is in control of every one of them. Our moments may surprise and confuse us, but He is never surprised or confused.

At the House of Hope (HOH), we find ourselves in one of those difficult and confusing moments. One where you shake your head and, hopefully, join King Jehoshaphat in saying:

“We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.”    —2 Chronicles 20:12

A variety of things have brought us here. The world is a difficult place financially right now. Prices are high and uncertainty abounds. In Haiti, we can add the relentless increase in the cost of living as gang activity continues to create havoc throughout the country.

Through it all, we are incredibly grateful for you—our partners in ministry—whose generosity has helped keep our doors open. For 70 years, the House of Hope has been bringing hope to children and young people in Haiti who have faced many moments of hopelessness.

But right now, we are facing an extreme financial need to keep that work going.

There’s a Haitian concept called Koukouwouj (coo-coo-wooge) that I’ve shared about before. It carries the idea of everyone joining together when there is a need—nobody standing on the sidelines, but the whole group getting involved.

These days, I feel like we need to call a Koukouwouj among our partners.

This isn’t one of those moments when the weight can be carried by just a few people. We really do need our whole team, each person doing whatever God enables them to do. For some, that may mean giving. For others, praying, sharing the need, encouraging someone else to become involved, or simply continuing faithfully in the support you are already giving.

It’s a Koukouwouj kind of moment—all of us coming together to help carry what is in front of us.

And there is one more grace about difficult moments: they don’t last forever.

We will get through this one and move on to the next. Paul reminds us in 2 Corinthians 4:16–18 not to lose heart because the things we see are temporary, while the things we cannot see are eternal. Even in a difficult moment, we have hope because our eyes are fixed on something much greater than the moment itself.

So, would you pray about how you can join our Koukouwouj call for help in this difficult moment?
