Summer Update

Updated: Aug 24, 2023

And just like that we are well into summer! For the HOH it has been a hot one so far. We know for some of you that has been the case as well; and for some of you, you’ve have had lots of rain and flooding. “Fresco” or homemade slushies are one way that helps our kids keep cool and pass the the long days of summer. You can see 9 year old Mits helping Linda prepare Fresco for the HOH kids.

This past Sunday marked the final in a string of graduations that our students were involved in. For our university level students, this meant several different things. While for some of them, they are completely finished their studies and ready to start looking for work. For others, there are a few more steps they need to take. Some still have government exams to sit in order to get their licenses, and others still have to write and defend their final thesis papers. For a few, due to the insecurity problems, they have missed a course or two that they still have to make up. The really appreciate your support and prayers as they have been on this journey through these trying times in Haiti, and they will be working hard to finish up what they need to. We’d love your prayers for them to find work and be able to move on in their next steps in life.

Our other students are finally finished school for the summer except for the Grade 9 and 13 students. The grade 9’s (pictured here) finished today. They’ve been writing their government required exams these past 3 days. Then it is the turn of our 4 Grade 13’s, they will begin their 4 days of government exams on July 31. They would love your prayers. I haven’t been able to get a picture of them yet, because they are always busy these days either at school or in a study group at home. I will try to post on the Facebook page soon.

With the end of the school year, we are heading into our summer activities. Here are some news items to catch up on as well as some prayer requests:

  • Linda is in the middle of teaching a Child Evangelism Teacher’s training course. This will keep her busy over the next couple of weeks. Please pray for strength for her as it is always a lot of work and very tiring for her when she does this. But she loves teaching people how to teach God’s Word to children, so pray for the students too that they would be able to learn and then use what they learn to bring children to a knowledge of the Good News of Jesus.

  • We have multiple different travel plans over the next few months. Some to get necessary work and errands done in various places, and some for staff and kids to have a bit of a break over the summer. As always, travel around Haiti is not easy, so we’d love your prayers for wisdom and safety throughout the rest of the summer.

  • Due to the continuing issues in Haiti, we have decided not to have our usual week of Day Camp again this year. This is our 4th year we’ve had to skip it and we hope maybe next year we can start it up again.

  • Just today we received some things we had shipped to Haiti back in early June. Our shipping situation continues to be frustrating and precarious. We have another option we are looking into and hope to be able to meet with them and set something up soon. Pray that we can get this method of shipping supplies to the HOH up and running smoothly again soon.

  • Our mattress fund-raising project was a huge success. We have enough funds to start purchasing these mattresses, but need to work out the shipping kinks before we can do this on a large scale. Thank you so much to everyone who participated in this and stay tuned in the months ahead for updates on them actually getting to the HOH.

  • We have started another way that people can help us with things we need by starting an Amazon.com “wish list”. These are all items that we need, particularly right now for the coming school year. Some people have already purchased some of the items for us, and if you are interested in helping out in this way as well, here is the link. Please feel free to write us if you have any questions about this.

While Jenny was traveling around visiting friends, family and supporters, we wanted to encourage everyone with the incredible faithfulness of our God, so she shared these verses:

Lamentations 3:21-24 “But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. “The LORD is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.”

This is truly how we feel. God has been so faithful in taking care of us even during these very difficult times. He is the One in whom we can truly place our hope. Thank each one of you for your part in helping us continue to bring the hope of Jesus to the kids and youth who come to our home.

We appreciate all of you who keep in touch with us and pray on a regular basis. If you would like more frequent updates either by email (houseofhopehaiti1@gmail.com) or as a part of our Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/houseofhopehaiti1/), just let us know.
